Wolf senses
Wolves are aided in their hunting by their keen senses. While their capabilities of sight and hearing are impressive, by far the most developed sense in wolves is that of smell. Wolf researchers explain that a wolf's sense of smell is up to one hundred times more sensitive than a human's; there have been studies of wolves that were able to pick up the scent of a moose over four miles away. A wolf's daytime vision is similar to a human's, but its nighttime vision is superior. Wolves' peripheral, or side, vision is also excellent, and they have a keen ability to detect moving objects. Able to detect sounds out of human range, wolves also have a sharp sense of hearing. Wolves can hear as far as six miles away in the forest and ten miles away on the open tundra. |
